Homemade gunge: the ultimate messy play activity.

My children and I enjoy a spot of messy play every now and again.

It’s something that I have learned to relax about and enjoy as my children have gotten older. After all, the messier the fun the better it is, right?

We love baking, enjoy painting and never let a rainy day or muddy puddles spoil our outdoor adventures.

And now I can add something else to our list of our messy play activities – homemade gunge!

The first signs of Spring can do funny things to a person. And with blue skies and the sun’s rays warming our bones last weekend, I thought it was a great excuse to get into the garden, get some fresh air and enjoy some unadulterated and carefree fun.

After all, with the mess being mainly confined to the garden (and easily washed away with the hose), how messy could it really get?

We had a ton of fun making our slime and it felt great to take some time away from household chores to do nothing apart from be silly with my children. The grins on their faces were priceless and that’s what counts.

If you’d like make your own gunge, here’s the ‘recipe’ we followed. It’s super easy with only three – yes, three – ingredients.

You will need
  • 250ml warm water
  • Powder paint (any colour)
  • 140g corn flour
What you will need to do
  • Pour the water into a large bowl.
  • Add about 4 tablespoons of powder paint into the bowl and mix. If you want your gunge to be a darker colour, just add more powder paint.

  • Pour the corn flour into a large bowl or bucket.
  • Slowly add the paint mixture to the corn flour and then mix the ingredients together until it forms a smooth paste. You can either do this with your hands or with a large spoon.

  • Once the mixture is ready, leave it to stand for 20-30 minutes. Alternatively, you could put it into your fridge to cool.

It really is that simple!

Of course, there was only one thing Sophia and Dexter wanted to do with their gunge once it was ready to use…

Thanks to Persil for sending me the gunge recipe and all the necessary ingredients (and also for sending me some of their Small and Mighty washing liquid to get my clothes clean afterwards!).

For Red Nose Day this year, Persil has created some special edition bottles and will donate 8p to Comic Relief for each one sold.

Persil’s also encouraging people to make their faces funny for charity this year, so why not get involved and make your face funny for charity? You could photograph yourself or others getting ganged (or doing something else to make your face funny) and upload your photo to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #RNDface.

If you want to donate, you can text PERSIL to 70703. Texts will cost £3 plus your standard message charge and the £3 will go straight to Comic Relief. For full terms and conditions and more information go to rednoseday.com/terms.
